Hence, there is plenty of oyster-related fun to be had: an oyster shucking championship, an oyster cook-off, as well as just plain old good eatin'.

But, that alone wouldn't be true festival. So there's also live music, road racing, and more water activities than you can shake an oyster at. There's even a surfing contest.

Where is it?

The Ocean Isle Oyster Festival takes place in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. Located on the Atlantic coast, this tiny town of only a few hundred inhabitants swells to over 30,000 people during the festival, but still boasts a cozy New England atmosphere and plenty of accommodations.

When is it?

The Ocean Isle Oyster Festival is an annual event held each October. In 2008, the festival will be held over the 18th and 19th.

Our take

A delight for seafood and non-seafood lovers alike. Sure, the former may enjoy their time just a little bit more, but that's only natural. As for when you're not eating: a magnificent oceanfront, organized fun and a wonderful festive atmosphere, and North Carolina hospitality. Plus, if you drive in to Ocean Isle Beach, you get to experience Carolina's natural beauty, which, let me tell you, is worth the trip all in itself.

R. If you're wondering what the deuce that is, the signature event pits the fastest woolly caterpillars in the world against each other in a head-to-head race up a piece of string. Winner takes $1000!

Participants can either bring their own woolly worm or buy one on-site. The racers also have to be named. Be creative.

Where is it?

The Woolly Worm Festival is held in Beattyville, a small town in Kentucky that boasts about having that unique American "small town feel".

Beattyville's main streets are closed off for the duration of the festival.

When is it?

The Wolly Worm Festival is held annually in October. In 2008, the dates are October 19th to the 21st.

Our take

What a unique piece of folklorist Americana mixed with modern-day entertainment! Although the centerpiece "race" may not initially sound like fun, the festival's atmosphere is superb, and there really are enough various activities to keep every member of the family satisfied for three days. Plus, if you're not a kid anymore, you'll sure feel like one.

Remember to take a trip to Natural Bridge State Park when you're there, too. It's an exquisite example of natural beauty.

R.
